Contribution to the Forum on Global Financial Crisis
ILPS Third International Assembly

By Professor Jose Maria Sison
Chairperson, International Coordinating Committee
International League of Peoples' Struggle

I wish to comment on the gravity of the current financial crisis of the world capitalist system and on the impact of this in the various major contradictions in the world, with special attention to the people's resistance in Asia, Africa and Latin America and in the imperialist countries.

Gravity of the Global Financial Crisis

The economic and financial crisis of the US and world capitalist system has worsened to a new and unprecedented level since the Great Depression. This signifies the utter failure of the attempt of the US and other imperialist powers to overcome the problem of stagflation under Keynesianism with the policy shift to neoliberalism. Instead, the latter policy has aggravated and deepened the crisis of overproduction in the real economy and has given free rein to the abuses of finance capitalism.

Strengthen the people’s struggle, unite to build a New World against imperialist aggression, state terrorism, plunder and social destruction!

By Varavara Rao

I am to pen down this address at a time when I don’t know whether I could attend this significant Assembly of World’s People’s Struggles as I haven’t been granted a passport by the Indian authorities.

I am greatly honoured to have been invited to deliver the keynote address to the Third International Assembly of the International League of People’s Struggles (ILPS). As a revolutionary poet from India, I salute the anti-imperialist and anti-feudal struggles which have come together on the banner of ILPS from all the continents. I value this organization of toiling masses of the world with great respect and hope because the need of the hour is to fight imperialism unitedly by all oppressed peoples and end it forever to usher in a new world based on egalitarian principles. Imperialism is the last epoch of oppressive social order in the long march of human society world over, which divided all humans into classes, castes, nations and all varieties of divisions.

"Fascism will never come to America as fascism. It will come as 100 percent Americanism."

“When fascism come to America, it will be wrapped in the flag, carrying a cross"
Sinclair Lewis

After the Second World War, the US imperialism had premeditated two immediate objectives in its drive to global hegemony. One was to defeat socialism and destroy the Soviet Union together with the regimes allied to it. The second aim was to subvert and subdue the national-democratic revolutions in the colonies and semi-colonies. The anticommunist crusade of the Cold War was the culmination of this plan.

To fight for alternative solutions and for structural reforms (that is to say, for intermediate objectives) is not to fight for improvements in the capitalist system; it is rather to break it up, to restrict it, to create counter powers which, instead of creating a new equilibrium, undermines its very foundation.
Andre Gorz, Strategy for Labor

Long before a young first time senator from Illinois, of Kenyan descent and with a funny sounding name like Barrack Obama, transfixed the world on his march towards the highest political office in the United States, former President Bill Clinton, billed as the most “black” President of the US, had this to say on his last sojourn to Africa;

In September 2003, at the International Meeting Against Military Bases, organized in the island of Crete in Greece by ILPS, the participants concluded that peoples' struggle against imperialism and military bases is necessary as part of the general strategy of the international people's movement. It is evidence today that the global crisis is deepening and together with the intensification of antagonisms between imperialists contribute in the further exploitation and oppression of the toiling masses. State terrorism as well as police and army suppression have become the only way for the various governments to control peoples' discontent.
